Amid interviews, a council commissioner pushes city to consider property acquisitions and interim housing options

While most of the April 27 meeting was devoted to candidate interviews for Sunnyvale's advisory bodies, the agenda included a late exchange that underscored a persistent council challenge: where to site temporary or interim housing and how the city can move faster to provide shelter options.

Jim Davis, a reapplying commissioner, told council the city should be more proactive in using its property tools to secure sites for interim housing or safe parking. "We could easily use our eminent domain capabilities to acquire that property," he said, urging the city to consider acquiring vacant commercial or hotel parcels that could be repurposed for sheltered or interim uses.

Safe-parking and interim housing programs can be implemented faster than permanent developments, but they require operating funds and a clear site control strategy.
