Sheriff Holloway: Jail population drops, clearance rates rise; recruiting continues

The sheriff said jail bookings fell from 108 to 93 for the month and the average daily population decreased to 89, trends he attributed in part to shorter stays, bondings or court adjudications. Holloway said the jail had several vacancies but expects four cadets currently in the police academy to fill openings in June after graduation and field training. "We have some applicants there that we're reviewing right now," he said, describing continued recruitment efforts and a multi-month timeline for new recruits to complete probation and training.
The report also showed changes in enforcement activity: adult arrests decreased from 67 to 60, traffic citations rose to 111 and warnings to 366, and served arrest warrants increased to 98. The sheriff explained "welfare calls" as requests to check on a person’s well-being initiated by family or dispatch, and described two death investigations among the month’s responses.
Commissioners asked about per-inmate costs; the sheriff estimated daily housing costs around $80–$120 depending on medical needs, and noted that reduced jail population yields budgetary savings. The court received the report; no further action was taken during the meeting.
