The West Warwick Town Council on April 28 approved an amendment to the town-hall roofing project budget, adding $63,713.60 to cover prevailing-wage costs that were inadvertently omitted from the second RFP.
Council discussion explained the roof project is approximately 99% complete but that vendors did not price prevailing wages because the RFP lacked prevailing-wage language. Officials said the oversight requires the town to cover the additional amount so that workers are paid at the rates they should have been paid under prevailing-wage obligations. "This includes making those employees at the rate that they should have been paid in the first place as well as a penalty to the town for that omission," a presenter said.
The presenter said the Department of Labor and Training will process funds to ensure affected employees are made whole. The council moved and seconded the resolution to increase the appropriation; the motion carried by voice vote.
Council members had no further questions recorded and approved the adjustment. No additional details on contractor identity or the exact breakdown of the added amount between wages and penalties were provided in the meeting record; the presenter said the roof vendors must return to complete skylight installation when materials arrive.
The council directed that the town proceed with completion of the remaining roof tasks and to coordinate with the Department of Labor and Training for wage remediation.
