Chavez, who had been appointed to a commission seat during the previous term, thanked colleagues and residents and framed the appointment as a mandate to continue the city’s recent priorities. “I’m very very honored to be sitting up here on this commission with you guys,” Chavez said, adding the team had “positioned our community to reach new heights.” He also cited historic voter turnout — “nearly 40%” — as a sign of resident support.
Mayor Eric Daspadron and other commissioners praised Chavez’s prior service and said they expected him to take a lead role on upcoming initiatives. The motion to confirm Chavez as vice mayor passed with affirmative votes from the full body.
The commission proceeded with the meeting’s agenda following the oath; Chavez will serve as vice mayor until the term specified by the city’s charter and any subsequent votes or reappointments by the commission.
