Stokes County approves drainage repair and budget amendment for Walnut Cove parks

Glenda Puit updated the board Oct. 28 on maintenance needs at the Walnut Cove Lions Park and East Walnut Cove Community Park. Staff identified a collapsed drainage pipe that has created a hole and solicited bids for a small scope of work to correct drainage; of four returned proposals, East Landscaping provided the lowest bid at $772 and staff recommended awarding that work to the company.
Puit also described a cluster of trees leaning toward the playground and shelter and a separate set of dead trees near a ball field that could take out a fence if they fall. Staff reported informal estimates for tree removal in the affected areas ranging from $6,000 to $7,500; formal bids for tree removal were pending.
Because the jobs were not budgeted, staff asked to move the items to action and requested a budget amendment. During the meeting the board approved the drainage award and approved budget amendment 35 as part of the add‑on approvals.
Next steps: staff will execute the East Landscaping contract for drainage repair, solicit formal tree‑removal bids and award the work to the lowest responsible bidder within the $6,000–$7,500 estimate or return to the board if costs exceed the amendment.
