Deschutes County adopts proclamations for Stroke Awareness, Mental Health, Historic Preservation and Vietnamese American Remembrance

Stroke Awareness: Taylor Lea, who identified herself as a representative of Stroke Awareness Oregon, urged education about signs and symptoms and described the group's local outreach. "We are a local nonprofit here in Central Oregon and we exist to spread education to the community about signs and symptoms and what to look for," Taylor Lea said. County Health Services Director Holly Harris thanked partners and noted the county's support for public education.
Mental Health: The proclamation for Mental Health Awareness Month cited prevalence statistics and rising behavioral-health concerns among youth; Holly Harris and commissioners encouraged use of local resources including the stabilization center and emphasized early treatment.
Historic Preservation: Volunteers and staff from the historical society and landmarks commissions (Heidi Kennedy, Tanya Saltzman) highlighted events across the county recognizing May as Historic Preservation Month; the board noted community displays and preservation work.
Vietnamese American Remembrance Day: The board recognized April 30 as Vietnamese American Remembrance Day following a request from the Oregon Vietnamese community leadership and noted the broader statewide and national observances.
Actions and optics: Each proclamation was read, moved, seconded and adopted by voice vote; staff and commissioners paused for photographs following the readings.
