Budget and capital projects top candidates’ agenda; Perez highlights $9 million energy contract

Budget and capital projects dominated a number of answers at the Shoreham‑Wading River Meet the Candidates night.

Dan Maguire, who said he would use his CPA background to address the district’s finances, proposed "starting a budget advisory committee" and urged the board to examine overhead costs before cutting programs. "We must carefully review district overhead and unnecessary spending so that resources are directed where they matter most," Maguire said.

Several candidates cautioned against cutting teachers or increasing class sizes. Erin Saunders Morano said she would oppose losing teachers or raising class sizes and called for fact‑based decisions: "I would need all the facts first before making any decision in reducing anything." Katie Anderson said class ratios and ICT supports should be protected to preserve student experience.

Henry Perez, noting his board experience and facilities background, described a $9 million energy performance contract (EPC) intended to fund building improvements through projected energy savings: "Energy performance contract is something that pays for itself," he said, and said he wants to remain involved as the contract continues.

On capital projects, candidates suggested a bond study to consider both athletics and academic needs. Proposals to expand outdoor and athletic facilities were balanced against concerns about taxpayer impact and timing: "It should only happen when our current bond goes off and doesn't affect the taxpayers," one candidate said.
