Manassas students win state history honor; Osborne robotics praised for community spirit

Amanda Jones, the GT teacher who led Manassas students to multiple placings at the recent National History Day competitions, told the school board the program grew this year and included a state first-place finish in an elementary individual performance. “One of them, Rosemary, won first place for the state for elementary individual performance,” Jones said, highlighting a student-written solo about the Radium Girls.
The board also heard from Leonard Newman, adviser to the Osborne High School robotics team, who detailed a busy season across both VEX and FIRST robotics platforms. Newman said more than 50 students participated across programs this year and described how the team converted to a swerve-drive system and expanded community outreach with sponsors and a summer camp supported by a VEXGO donation from Lockheed Martin. “This is a student-led program with the students making many of the major decisions,” Newman said.
Newman noted the team’s public-engagement work, including a parade-style robot display and a festive robot that won a judges’ award for community spirit. Board members and the superintendent thanked the students, coaches and parent volunteers for their support and recognized the teams’ appearances at local events and upcoming fundraising displays.
The board’s acknowledgements closed the spotlight segment and transitioned to committee reports and the regular agenda.
