Board approves new playground at Sixth District, funded by site-based money and donations

The Covington Board of Education voted to approve replacement of the playground at Sixth District School, accepting a quote from Bluegrass Recreation for a project cost of $65,853 including installation.
Principal Moran described a decades-old wooden playground that had been partially destroyed by fire and later removed after becoming unsafe. The principal said a committee of staff, parents and community members solicited quotes and raised some private donations; remaining funds will come from site-based budget money allocated to Sixth District. Director Burchie confirmed no direct district general-fund allocation is planned for the purchase, although the project will use SPDM (site-based) funds that originate from the general fund but are designated for the school.
Board members asked about shade and design details. Staff said they considered shade but the additional cost was prohibitive within the current budget; the playground site has trees at the perimeter but not shade directly over the equipment. Trustees encouraged exploring natural shade or future grants but approved the current proposal so the school can proceed with installation once final donations are secured.
The board moved and approved the recommendation to proceed with the Bluegrass Recreation option; the principal and staff will confirm final fundraising and proceed with procurement and installation.
