The commission unanimously moved to support a resolution requesting a bridge naming to honor two Anderson County soldiers who died on deployments. The resolution asks state authorities to name the northbound side of a Highway 25 bridge in memory of Sergeant First Class James David Connerly Jr., who died May 12, 2007 in Baqubah, Iraq, and the southbound side for Corporal Jason D. Hovaider, who died July 13, 2008 in Kunar, Afghanistan.
Jessica Hovaider Davis, the Gold Star sister of Cpl Jason Hovaider, told the commission about his service, the Battle of Wanat and the Mountain Man Memorial March, and said memoriam work helps families and veterans heal. "He is a history-maker," she said, describing her brother's Silver Star action and the broader significance to families and veterans.
Mayor Templin and others said they will help move the request to the state legislature and thanked families for their work. The commission voted in favor of the motion by voice vote.
