Public commenters press board on vaccine mandates and playing the national anthem at more events

During the public‑comment portion of the meeting, Crystal Nicholas of Green urged the board to protect parental authority over medical decisions and criticized vaccine mandates as discriminatory, saying such policies marginalize students and families. Her remarks framed vaccine mandates as a civil‑liberties issue and asked the board to respect parents’ decisions.

Lindsay Sawyer Brown, who identified herself as working at Trip Middle as a clinician and a parent, proposed routine displays of flags and playing the national anthem at a wider set of sporting events, not only varsity football and basketball, and suggested giving students opportunities to perform the anthem at games. She called the change a “simple but meaningful” step to build unity and asked that the topic be added to a future agenda for further board consideration.

Board members acknowledged the comments and said the district will consider public input; the chair reiterated that public‑comment rules and any pending policy updates would inform future discussion.
