County landfill near capacity; new scale-house entrance nearly complete, official says

White County officials received an operational update on the county landfill and convenience-center work, including reported daily intake, entrance changes and landscaping plans.
Tom Brandon told the solid waste committee the site is currently taking 850 to 1,000 tons a day — roughly 240,000 tons a year — and that Phase One of the landfill is progressing. He said the existing entrance will be phased out and fenced, planted and closed for a short period while a new entrance and scale house are completed.
Brandon said the new scale-house entrance is “almost complete,” but staff are waiting for power service and for the Tennessee Department of Transportation to install flashing lights so trucks can enter and exit “safely.” He added the county plans to plant trees around the new entrance and close the old access once the transition is finished.
Commissioners asked follow-ups about related site work and a separate fencing survey that could affect the county animal shelter (see separate article). No formal action was taken on the landfill update; the committee moved on after questions and confirmed the April minutes.
The report reflected ongoing operational work rather than any new permitting or rate decisions. The solid waste committee scheduled its next meeting for June 1 and sent routine minutes to the record.
