Board hears fieldhouse, Rice Elementary and parking updates; Rice bid opening set for May 14

The board received an update May 4 from the facilities and security committee on several capital projects and planning items.
Mr. Decker summarized the committee’s April 29 meeting. Administrators and consultants discussed closeout work and liquidated damages negotiations on recent projects, progress on Rice Elementary renovations and toilet-room work, and a pre-bid contractor walk-through. The Rice Elementary bid opening was reported as slated for Thursday, May 14; the administration said it plans to present a recommendation on bids at the May 18 meeting.
The committee reviewed an updated fieldhouse design that included visiting-team concessions and separate toilet/concession facilities, and it considered options for adding additional seating in the high school gym. The committee recommended not moving forward on widening a nearby entrance at this time; a traffic study for that work had an estimated price of $15,000. The committee recommended moving forward with design for a 100-space parking lot behind the high school.
Committee materials and the report state that South Middleton (as the local township/district funding arrangement was discussed in the meeting) is committed to contributing 50% of the parking project cost, which the committee estimated between $540,000 and $580,000. Mr. Decker also reported a demonstration of a GPS-based field-lining machine that could reduce labor for field marking.
The committee concluded with a recommendation to forward several disposals and the PA State Police memorandum of understanding to the full board for approval and then went into an executive session on a student-related matter.
The administration will return with bid recommendations and more detailed cost and schedule information at future meetings.
