Council gives nod to apply for state preservation grant; city match of $16,000 proposed

City staff told the Fayetteville City Council on May 4 that the State Historic Preservation Office opened a Certified Local Government grant opportunity and staff asked for council’s informal support to apply on behalf of College Heights and Seabrook Hills.
The staff presentation said the full project runs about $40,000; the state grant would cover approximately $24,000 and the city would be asked to provide roughly $16,000 from the general fund as a match. Staff noted the city’s grant procedures require council authorization to apply and asked for a consensus ‘nod’ to place an authorization item on the council consent agenda.
Council members asked whether a state historic designation imposes local architectural restrictions and were told a historic designation does not automatically impose local review unless the council later establishes a local historic district; the Historic Resources Commission enforces architectural standards only where local rules apply.
Outcome: Council gave unanimous consensus to move the authorization to the consent agenda for the May council meeting.
