The Town of Sunset Beach council unanimously adopted the NC 904 corridor study on May 4, accepting a planning document that provides recommendations for intersection, pedestrian and bicycle improvements from Highway 17 south to Sunset Beach Drive.
The study, prepared by Bolton & Mink and coordinated with the Grand Strand Area Transportation Study (GSATS), Brunswick County and N.C. Department of Transportation (NCDOT), inventories existing conditions, documents community engagement and sets a horizon of short‑, mid‑ and long‑term projects. Presenters told council the southern portion of the corridor is operating at or above capacity and noted that virtually no recommended projects are currently fully funded.
Adoption places the plan into town records and flags the projects within regional and DOT planning systems so the town may seek federal or state funding in the future. Staff emphasized adoption is a policy guidance step and does not obligate the town or DOT to build projects. Many recommended projects — including possible intersection improvements and corridor cross‑sections that show medians and pedestrian amenities — would require further design, environmental review and interagency agreements before construction.
Council asked clarifying questions about responsibility for maintaining landscaping and medians and the likely implementation timeframe; presenters estimated major reconstruction projects were 10+ years out absent new funding, though some shorter‑term safety interventions could be advanced sooner.
Council voted to adopt the plan by motion and voice vote, and the plan will be available for future grant requests and more detailed design if the town and partner agencies pursue projects.
