Union County commissioners appoint Errol Wedra to fill vacancy

The Union County Board of Commissioners voted May 4 to appoint Errol Wedra to fill a vacancy on the board and administered his oath of office immediately.

Mark Pitman, chair of the Union County Republican Party, told commissioners his executive committee had conducted a special-meeting selection process and recommended Wedra for both the short-term appointment through Dec. 7, 2026, and as the party’s nominee for the November 2026 general election. “Errol Wedra received a majority vote. Therefore, the Union County Republican Party recommends Errol Wedra to the Union County Board of County Commissioners to fill the vacancy,” Pitman said during his remarks.

County Attorney Jason Kay briefed the board on the legal framework for filling vacancies under North Carolina General Statute 153A-27, noting the board has 60 days to make an appointment and is not legally required to select the party’s recommendation. After a motion to appoint Wedra, the board approved the appointment on a voice vote with no recorded opposition. Wedra took the oath and took his seat that evening.

The motion’s maker and second were not recorded in the public portion of the transcript; the board used a voice vote and no roll-call tally was entered into the record. Following the appointment, the board named Wedra to serve as the county representative on the Monroe-Union Economic Development Commission.

The appointment is effective immediately; Wedra will serve on the board until the first meeting in December, after which the remainder of the term will be filled according to the November election results.
