CPD chief reports wounded sergeant, promotes community training and outreach

Chief Angel Novales, speaking for the Chicago Police Department, told the board that an on-duty sergeant assigned to the Fifth District sustained a non-life-threatening gunshot wound during an incident that also injured another civilian. "This traumatic incident is a reminder of how inherently dangerous this profession is," Novales said and asked the board and public to keep the sergeant in their thoughts as she recovers.
Novales thanked officers and community members for safety at St. Patrick's Day events, including downtown and neighborhood parades, and encouraged residents to register for a "Day in a Life of a Recruit" community training observation day scheduled for April 11. He said participants can attend a half or full day and will see classroom and scenario-based training on topics that include use of force and the Fourth Amendment.
Novales also invited community members to participate in beat meetings, serve as beat facilitators and join problem-solving efforts with district community policing sergeants. He said information and registration are available on CPD and Police Board web pages.
