Board members questioned the vendor’s practice of requiring large upfront payments for a multi‑year service and asked administrators to negotiate more annualized payment terms or a multi‑year amortization that would ease one‑year budget pressure. One board member asked for a yearly breakdown of the five‑year costs to be added to the administrative materials in advance of a formal vote.
Administrators clarified that workbooks included in the Savvas agreement are consumable and distributed annually to students, while online resources remain available through the district’s learning management system. Mr. Marcy and other staff said some pilot materials had been received and that vendor concessions had reduced costs within the presented package.
On student‑services software, administrators proposed MaiaLearning as a replacement for Naviance, estimating annual costs of about $7,100 compared with roughly $8,900 for the existing Naviance service; transition overlap for one senior class will create a small prorated overlap cost in the first year.
Because of the size of the Savvas contract and its budgetary impact, several board members recommended pulling items with significant cost implications from the consent agenda to ensure separate discussion and formal votes.
