Marshall County approves NIPSCO road‑use deal, bridge credit and equipment auction plans

Marshall County commissioners on May 5 approved a set of highway and utility actions intended to limit road damage from major transmission work, finalize a bridge contract credit and move surplus equipment to auction.

County staff presented a road‑use agreement with NIPSCO covering routes the company will use while stringing an extra transmission line across the county. Sean, a county staff member, said the agreement “lays out the roads that they're supposed to be using, processes for if they have to use other ones and making sure they're staying in communication with everybody” and that it provides for compensation and repairs if damage occurs. Commissioners moved and approved the agreement.

The board also approved change order number four on contract B‑42826 for Bridge 232, which resulted in a credit to the county of $42,274.33. Commissioners voted to accept the credit and authorized the necessary signatures.

Staff reviewed other bridge and road items and presented two equipment‑purchase quote packages for county vehicles and heavy equipment. Because final numbers for the 2026 Community Crossings program were not yet firm, commissioners authorized staff to submit a credit application “up to $1.9 million,” with the board president designated to sign the application. The county also announced an online auction of surplus equipment — including multiple sheriff vehicles and highway machinery — to run for about 10 days; materials will be posted on the county website and the auction agreement was approved with the board president as the lone signer.

What’s next: county staff will proceed with the NIPSCO coordination and the equipment auction posting; subcommittee review of equipment‑purchase quotes is scheduled before final council action on procurement.
