Arts & Humanities Council asks for $500,000 above Executive recommendation; council places $200,000 in tranches on reconciliation list

The Arts & Humanities Council told the Education and Culture Committee it is seeing sharply increased grant demand and asked the council to consider an additional $500,000 beyond the County Executive’s recommended 3% increase for FY26.

Suzanne Jenkins, CEO of the Arts & Humanities Council, said applications have risen and the council is funding communities and culturally specific organizations that historically lacked access. "For program and capacity building grants, we note that there were 46 applicants, but actually now we see that there were 52 eligible grants," Jenkins said, urging added funding to serve new applicants rather than increase award sizes.

Chair Jowanda proposed a compromise to add funding in two $100,000 tranches placed on the reconciliation list for full council review; the committee indicated support for placing that recommendation on the list rather than immediately committing the full $500,000.
