Local artist Nathan Beard’s work opens in chamber gallery; city issues several week‑long proclamations

The City Commission welcomed artist Nathan Beard at its May 5 work session as the City Hall Chamber Gallery’s featured artist, and commissioners read proclamations honoring public‑works professionals, drinking water operators and public servants.
Arts consultant Elizabeth Frinko introduced Beard and his Ponds Edge series as works that explore the interplay of water, plant life and light in local landscapes. Beard described finding inspiration in nearby preserves and parks and said the series began about a decade ago while observing water patterns on family walks.
“I just like that idea of how do we live with nature in our urban environment,” Beard said, describing the interplay between surface and depth that he explores in the series. Commissioners asked about specific local sites that appear in Beard’s work (Brooker Creek, Hammock Park, Eagle Lake) and praised the gallery program; staff said Beard’s work will be on exhibit through the end of the month.
Separately, the commission read proclamations: National Public Works Week (May 17–23) recognizing public‑works staff and volunteer efforts; Drinking Water Week (May 3–9) highlighting the city’s utilities staff who deliver more than 1.2 billion gallons annually; and Public Service Recognition Week (May 3–9) honoring city employees. Utilities and engineering director Clay Watkins and HR Director Theresa Smalling addressed the chamber, thanked staff and outlined small events and outreach associated with the proclamations.
