Clayton clerk marks Professional Municipal Clerks Week, highlights clerks' role in documenting public concerns

Heidi Hollow, clerk for the Town of Clayton, said the town is "celebrating Professional Municipal Clerks Week," and used her remarks to outline the clerks’ everyday responsibilities.

Hollow told attendees that clerks undertake "a lot of preparation, a lot of communication with staff, department heads, um town managers, even down to the public to proclamations and things like that," stressing that the work involves coordination across departments.

She described clerks’ review practices: she often proofs documents, sets them aside, and then looks again the next day with a fresh perspective, and the office also has others double-check documents to catch mistakes.

Hollow emphasized how public comments are handled: "The mayor and council, they do listen to every concern and they do take it all to heart and it does not go unnoticed. So, although they may sit up here and someone has a public comment and they express their concern, you may just get an okay, thank you, but I want everyone to know that that does not go unnoticed. It's documented, it's thought about, it's passed on to staff, and it is important to council and staff."
