Jean Blaney, speaking for the local recreation and mental health working group, briefed the school committee on Mental Health Awareness Month activities that the group expanded this year to reach residents of all ages. Blaney credited close coordination with school staff and multiple town partners and listed upcoming events, community resources and training opportunities.
Blaney said the group offered youth mental health first aid training that will wrap up this week at the high school, is airing PSAs about mental health on WRPS, and hosted a community resource fair at the Council on Aging. She highlighted free fitness programs at the Council on Aging and a guided walk at Hartseuff Park, as well as a "junk journaling" workshop for kids.
Blaney also announced a panel presented by the NAM Project for adults ages 18 and older on May 26 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the community center to discuss suicide awareness and how to respond to someone in crisis. Blaney directed residents to the NAM Project website for more information and encouraged anyone in crisis to call 988, available 24/7.
She thanked the many partners involved in crafting the month’s calendar, including the Council on Aging, veterans services, the Board of Health, Rockland Public Schools representatives and the library.
