Board approves world language textbooks and nine policy updates; consensus on reviewing behavior framework

Textbook adoption: The board voted unanimously to approve an extension of the world language textbook adoption with Wayside Publishing for the "Entree Culturas" Spanish and French series to add Spanish 3 and French 4 courses, at a total cost of $28,353.25 (including shipping). The motion was made by Trustee Hinrich and supported by Trustee Smith; a roll-call vote recorded unanimous approval.
Policy package: The board also adopted nine policy updates recommended by district counsel, covering education records, extracurricular personal branding, cell-phone/behavior policy updates to align with state requirements, curriculum-notification requirements when the district uses materials not on the state's evidence list, inclusion of state grant language in business policy, clarification on facility dog policies, records-retention language conforming to state technology management guidance, commercial-advertising language and updates to web and digital content policy. The motion was approved by roll-call vote (unanimous yes).
Behavior framework discussion: Multiple trustees raised concern about student behavior, bullying and threats to staff during the meeting and urged the board to revisit the district's student behavior framework and complaint/discipline processes, including parent accountability. The superintendent acknowledged the board's interest and said the item will be prioritized for committee review.
What's next: The district will publish policy language (as required by governance processes) and return to the board committees to continue work on student behavior policies and related processes.
