Berlin McKinney teachers to present playful math stations at state education conference

Marissa Shoemaker and Brittany Blankenship told the board they were accepted to present their 'Galaxy of Growth' active-learning math stations at the West Virginia Department of Education conference in Charleston this July. "Students are more likely to be engaged when they're having fun," Shoemaker said, describing Toy Story–themed stations and daily songs used to reinforce concepts.
They walked members through station examples used in kindergarten through fourth grade—number-line activities, egg-number addend games with tongs, measurement stations using rulers, and array/multiplication puzzles. Both teachers said other educators requested resources and that their classroom techniques aim to support retention through movement and repetition.
The board praised the teachers' energy and said the county funds professional learning that allows staff to share practices statewide. The teachers said the district provides funding for conference attendance and that they will distribute materials on request.
