Commission postpones Masjid Balal expansion after traffic study raises existing intersection concerns
Summary
The Planning Commission postponed action on a 28,786‑sq‑ft mosque addition and parking expansion at 1525 North Ridge Road (069-ADS-8690), citing unresolved traffic deficiencies at Ridge & Ford and a need for Wayne County coordination before findings can be made.

Canton Township’s Planning Commission voted to postpone consideration of a site‑plan application for a 28,786‑square‑foot addition to Masjid Balal at 1525 North Ridge Road because the traffic impact review identified existing deficiencies at the Ridge & Ford intersection that require further coordination with Wayne County and MDOT.
Staff characterized the proposal as an expansion that would add an enlarged prayer area, a banquet/assembly space and a gymnasium and noted the parcel is roughly six acres and currently hosts a mosque and a residence. Staff said the traffic study flagged stacking and capacity problems at the nearby Ford & Ridge intersection during peak times and recommended coordination with Wayne County on potential mitigation measures (right‑turn lanes, dedicated turn signals or signal retiming) before the township could make final findings required by section 27.02G of the zoning ordinance.
Applicant representative Muhammad Siddiaki (Anam Engineering) told the commission the team would comply with landscaping and material requirements and sought conditional approval to begin high‑priority parking‑lot work, but commissioners and staff stressed that traffic coordination with Wayne County and MDOT was essential before the township could complete its review. Commissioners repeatedly noted the intersection’s existing congestion and the nearby new residential development that will add travel demand.
The commission voted to postpone the application and requested revised application materials and agency coordination results before rescheduling.
What happens next: applicant will continue coordination with Wayne County and MDOT and submit updates addressing staff’s traffic and landscaping comments; staff said the zoning staff and engineering division will work with county agencies and return findings at a later meeting.
