Brazos County proclaims May ALS Awareness Month and National Police Week; resident with ALS thanks court

The Brazos County Commissioners Court on May 5 adopted two proclamations honoring people living with ALS and law-enforcement personnel.

The court read and approved Proclamation 26-016, designating May 2026 as ALS Awareness Month, and Proclamation 26-017, declaring May 10–16, 2026 National Police Week and May 15, 2026 Peace Officers Memorial Day. Both proclamations passed by voice vote.

Why it matters: Proclamations are ceremonial but public recognition draws attention to local needs and services. The ALS proclamation noted the disease’s progressive nature and the role of clinical trials and assistive technologies, while the police-week proclamation recognized the daily risks law-enforcement officers face.

After the ALS proclamation, Thomas Hall, who identified himself as a Brazos County resident diagnosed with ALS in August 2025, thanked the court and described his care: “I spent my day yesterday at Houston Methodist,” he said, noting the role of regional medical centers in his treatment and expressing appreciation for the court’s recognition. Several attendees joined the court for photos.

When the police-week proclamation was read, a deputy addressed the court and thanked commissioners for the recognition, saying the proclamation is an opportunity to remember colleagues who died in the line of duty and to thank current officers for their service.

What’s next: The proclamations are ceremonial acknowledgements; the court took no further action tied to the proclamations during this meeting.
