Central Falls board votes to cut two instructional days after winter storm Hernando

Superintendent explained the state-level decision and the two-step process requiring each district to adopt the reduction locally under Rhode Island General Law 16-2-3. The board discussed the effect on the student calendar: students' last day would be Monday, June 22. Because union contracts require 180 contractual days, staff and union leaders are discussing options to meet contractual obligations, such as offering professional development days (full or half days) after the school year or before faculty contract days end.
Board members asked when the district would meet with unions; the superintendent said those conversations have already begun. A motion to approve the two-day reduction carried unanimously.
The district will continue discussions with the unions about compensatory professional development scheduling and confirm final details prior to implementation.
