Board celebrates student state and national qualifiers; student panel urges freshmen readiness and attendance

The Rochester Public Schools board opened its May 5 meeting with recognitions for National School Lunch Hero Day, Teacher Appreciation Week and a winter activities showcase. Activities directors presented multiple student accomplishments across BPA, FCCLA, speech and debate, wrestling, swimming, Science Olympiad and chess.
Three student panelists from the district's comprehensive high schools answered impromptu questions from the superintendent about preparation and setbacks at state and national competitions. Students talked about staying calm before events, recovering from narrow defeats, relying on parents and coaches, and encouraging younger students to "take every opportunity" and seek help when needed.
Superintendent Kent Pel and board members praised the student panel work, and the board highlighted a related student-school outreach project in which student-school-board members visited middle schools to talk about attendance, asking for help and navigating high school.
What comes next: Board members encouraged continued near-peer programs and said the district will recommend near-peer relationships as a priority in the strategic plan.
