Board hears hiring, staffing and instructional reports; HR flags retirements and resignations

Human-resources staff told the board the district held a March job fair with about 175 registrants and roughly 100 attendees and said principals are actively interviewing and hiring. The HR report listed nine retirees (seven teachers, two BAs) and 14 resignations to date (four teachers and 10 classified positions). Staff said they plan to hold three teaching positions in reserve in the budget and will conduct first-year teacher interviews to support retention.
In teaching-and-learning, Julie Beasley described the district's 'Extend' gifted-and-talented enrichment program, saying it serves "probably approximately 300 students" and that the district administered the CogAT assessment to about 185 students this year to identify candidates for the program. She reported strong competitive results at the Invention Convention: LSSD fourth and fifth graders won 16 of 30 awards and sixth–eighth graders won 15 of 30 awards; district middle-school teams also placed at a Future Cities competition.
Beasley and other staff outlined math supports including adoption of the Tennessee Reveal curriculum by McGraw Hill, supplemental tools (i-Ready and ALEKS), math coaches assigned across elementary and middle grades, and participation in the state's math implementation network. Staff said mid-year i-Ready math data shows increased on-grade-level performance in grades 6–8 compared with the previous year.
Board members asked for follow-up data on first-year teacher counts and retention and staff said they would provide that by Monday.
