Lebanon students present 'Day City' Future City project to board

Three students — Emily Sheay, Catherine Miller and Kenley Gil — presented their Future City project "Day City" to the Lebanon School Board, explaining the concept, transportation model and sustainability features.
The students said Day City would have roughly 250,000 residents and rely on sky lifts (citing a company called Whoosh) instead of roads to reduce maintenance costs and help low-income residents avoid car expenses. They described anaerobic digestion to convert food waste into biogas and fertilizer (stating Michigan disposes of 1.5 to 2 million tons of food waste per year in their presentation context) and said vertical and regenerative farming would support local food production. They also explained zoning that keeps agriculture and industry separated from residential areas and placed municipal buildings near neighborhoods for easy access.
Board members and staff praised the students’ work; staff noted several teams had attended an engineering program at UT Knoxville and won awards. The board conducted a short Q&A and thanked the students for the presentation.
The presentation was a student showcase and no board action was requested.
