Belknap County register reports stronger revenues, warns residents about property‑fraud deed

The Belknap County Register of Deeds told commissioners the office is about $38,000 ahead of last year through April and that electronic recording has increased to about 78 percent. The register said document counts are roughly 340 higher year‑to‑date than the same period last year.
The register announced hiring a new registry clerk who started at the end of March and noted that deputy Terry Flesome will retire at the end of July. The register said the deputy’s retirement leaves a smaller staff pool and that training of the new clerk is underway so the office can maintain coverage for reporting needs.
The register also described the county’s free property‑fraud alert service and urged residents to sign up. The register recounted a recent case in which a fraudulent deed for a vacant lot was recorded; the affected owner was alerted via the fraud notification and contacted police and an attorney. The register cautioned that the alert service does not prevent fraud but provides early notification when a recording appears.
The register recommended public outreach (advertisements, notices to towns and libraries) to increase signups for the free alert service.
