A board member moved to table the item so it could be discussed in policy committee; that motion failed on a roll call vote (three in favor, five opposed). Director Fox, speaking as policy chair, said she had questions about how the changes were developed and how they interact with administrative regulations but added, “I’m not opposed to updating policies,” and asked for the matter to be discussed further in committee before the final vote.
Board discussion centered on differences between the 2014 policy — which members said prohibited nepotism — and the proposed rewrite. Meeting participants were told the proposed policy would require central administration and the superintendent to notify the board promptly if a relative applied for a job and would bar a board member from participating in interview panels for positions where a relative is an applicant. In response to a direct question, someone in the meeting stated that on July 26, 2021 a hiring occurred that would have been prohibited under the previous policy.
On roll call, the motion for first reading of Policy 304.1 passed 6–2. Board members were reminded that the second read is scheduled in three business days and that further review in policy committee can be requested.
