Students from Penny Mesa showcase theater, yearbook and clubs; community updates highlight CTE wins

The board meeting opened with student presentations from Penny Mesa Middle School highlighting efforts to build student belonging and participation. Students and advisers described 15 on‑campus clubs, theater productions (a winter play and an upcoming spring performance of "The Little Mermaid" on May 13) and activities such as ceramics, a new tech club, sewing and robotics.
Yearbook editor Everly Mitchell and other yearbook staff presented a sneak preview of the school book, noted that the staff earned a silver medal at yearbook camp and said sales have increased after an Instagram campaign. "Being a part of the yearbook staff this year has been a rewarding experience," said Everly Mitchell.
Later in public comment the district provided a CTE update: staff said Toronto High School's medical pathway was named Pathway of the Year, the district's EMT pilot (13 students) is finishing required coursework and clinical rotations and is grant funded, and SkillsUSA and National History Day teams are advancing to state and national events.
A youthful in‑person public commenter, Dton Affleck (elementary student), introduced his pig, George Hamilton, and encouraged the community to visit the fair and the sale.
Trustees and administrators praised the presentations and noted the value of connecting student activities to district goals of "educate, inspire and prepare." The meeting record shows trustees thanked students and staff and encouraged attendance at the district student showcase scheduled for May 6.
