Board to send 2026-27 budget and amendments to May consent agenda

At its April 28 meeting, the Union County Board of Education voted to send the proposed 2026-27 budget to the May 5 Board of Education consent agenda and to forward multiple budget amendments and transfers to the same consent agenda.

Ms. McLain reviewed the budget and asked whether staff could present a slide combining all mandated expenses so the public could more easily see which items are required expenditures. "Is there any way though on some sort of slide to combine all of the mandated expenses so that basically the public can see that you know, yes, this is our total budget, but these are the items like we have to pay first," she said.

Staff described the amendments and transfers as routine adjustments that include state funding transfers for Career and Technical Education (CTE), federal program carryover funds (including late 2025 allocations issued this year), transportation funding, insurance proceeds, and several federal transfers intended to keep federal grant line items in compliance. The district said the federal and state transfers are administrative actions to align budget lines; no substantive policy changes were proposed.

The board moved, seconded, and approved forwarding the 2026-27 budget and the listed amendments/transfers to the May 5 consent agenda by voice votes. Following the consent-item approvals, the chair closed the meeting and the board adjourned.

Next steps: staff will prepare the requested visual breakdown of mandated expenses and will present the budget and amendments for final action at the May board meeting.
