Board members debated whether the condensed contract should explicitly include language to allow students to participate in two sports in the same season and whether both coaches should sign when a student seeks dual participation.
Board members raised safety, practice-time and roster concerns. A board member noted that allowing dual participation can affect trainers' schedules and player safety if athletes miss practice time for one sport. Another board member said the district should follow CIF regulations and recommended adding the CFR reference into the condensed contract.
Freddy Espinosa summarized the board's view of the draft: "I think it's a great start," and asked staff to return with revisions. Several trustees urged that the condensed contract include a simple mechanism requiring coach sign-off when a student intends to play two sports at once so coaches have a shared expectation.
Who decides: the discussion repeatedly returned to whether the parent/student or the coach has final say. One board member stated in the meeting that parents and students make the decision, while coaches should be involved in a required discussion.
