The Lauderhill City Commission on April 27 approved a set of land‑use amendments on second reading that update where accessory dwelling units are permitted, create a regulated 'food pantry' use for nonprofits and faith‑based groups, and change artificial‑turf and tree‑preservation rules.
City Attorney Ant summarized the provisions: accessory dwelling unit definitions and standards were added to Article 3; the food‑pantry language clarifies that nonprofits may distribute groceries but not prepare or serve hot meals on site; and schedule J adjustments clarify procedures and conditions for artificial turf installation.
Staff told faith‑based and nonprofit representatives that the first step is to submit a zoning verification request (the revised application is available immediately). Applicants that currently hold Certificates of Use will need to amend those COUs; planning staff offered to send guidance and outreach to existing nonprofit COU holders to expedite applications. The administrative fee for a COU amendment was described as a modest administrative cost.
All three ordinances passed on second reading with unanimous votes from commissioners present.
