The Newport City Council approved several capital purchases and contracts aimed at reducing operating costs and maintaining city facilities.
Solid-waste staff recommended buying a commercial compactor with a hopper to replace the current use of 40-yard open trailers. Staff estimated the compactor and hopper would cost roughly $75,000–$80,000 but said the device would pay for itself compared with continuing to pay an estimated $2,500 per month in extra county trip charges. The council approved the purchase in the amount recorded in the meeting packet.
The council also accepted low bids for two four-wheelers for the fire department to support Woodland Park operations and awarded a contract for concrete and drainage work at the Tanner building to Williams Lawn Care for $18,700 because that bidder could complete the work within the current budget year.
Votes: Each item was approved by motion and either roll call or recorded acceptance as noted in the council record.
What happens next: Procurement and Public Works staff will finalize purchasing orders and schedule delivery and installation; the compactor installation will require site preparation and vendor coordination before the unit is placed into service.
