The commission approved a second reading and public hearing to change the zoning of part of a 2.36-acre property at West Avenue and U.S. Highway 18 from commercial to A1 agricultural.
Toby Brunner of the county planning and zoning department explained the parcel is an "island" of county land surrounded by annexed city areas. Approximately 1.01 acres that contained an existing building had previously been overlaid with commercial zoning. The applicant, Michael Swanson, told the commission he intended to stop commercial operations and use the structure for personal storage, which triggered a staff recommendation to downzone to A1 to align with the comprehensive plan and city preferences. Brunner said the Planning Commission held a public hearing and recommended approval by a 5-0-1 vote (one abstention due to a board member's county role). Staff said no neighboring property owners had objected as of the meeting.
Commissioner Arends moved to approve and Commissioner Putnam seconded. Roll call recorded Putnam: Yes, Arends: Yes, Schmidt: Yes; the motion carried.
