Daly City accepts $12,500 DCPLA gift to support Lucky Day collection, scholarships and mural

The Daly City Public Library will receive a $12,500 gift through the Daly City Public Library Associates (DCPLA) to expand collections and programs, a DCPLA representative told the council. DCPLA director Sonia Singhal said about $2,000 of the donation came from memorial contributions honoring former library director Carol Simmons and will support the library’s Lucky Day collection.
Singhal described the remainder as funding priorities: $3,000 for a community‑room mural at the Serramonte Main Library timed with accessibility upgrades (including a new elevator), $4,000 to underwrite summer learning scholarships (winners eligible for a $1,000 529 scholarship drawing) and $3,500 to expand a ‘library of things’ learning‑kit program that would add hands‑on kits for arts, science and health activities.
Council members thanked DCPLA and highlighted the library’s role as a community hub for young people and older adults. Vice Mayor Piranho and other members expressed support for the scholarship and mural funding and asked clarifying questions about Wi‑Fi and program details.
The council recorded its appreciation for the donation and for the DCPLA’s ongoing partnership with city libraries.
