Board votes to expel a student after closed discipline hearing; student is a student with a disability, board says

The Tecumseh Public Schools Board on April 13 entered closed session under Public Act 267 of 1976 Section 8B for a student-discipline hearing and, upon returning to open session, approved a resolution recommending permanent expulsion of a student whose identity is known to the board.
Board members said the administration recommended expulsion after finding by a preponderance of the evidence that the student violated the district code of conduct and that the board carefully considered the seven factors set out in Michiganrevised school code Section 1310D. The board recorded a unanimous roll-call vote in favor of the resolution.
Trustees noted that the student is a student with a disability and that the district will provide appropriate educational services in accordance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) during the expulsion period. Administrators were directed and authorized to implement the terms of the resolution and to meet with the student's parents or guardians to ensure entitled services are provided.
The board did not identify the student publicly during the open meeting. The action followed the closed-session disciplinary hearing and was recorded in the boardmeeting minutes; transcripts show the board moved into closed session and later returned to open session to read and approve the resolution.
