During the April 13 meeting, district staff and student travelers described a proposed international study trip to Peru that administrators said would use the same provider (WorldStrides) the district used for a recent Costa Rica trip.
Valerie introduced students who had participated in the Costa Rica experience and outlined the proposed Peru itinerary, which includes classroom-linked learning in Lima, visits to Incan sites and markets, and hands-on cultural experiences. Students described authentic language practice at markets, school visits where Tecumseh students played games with local pupils, and outdoor activities such as white-water rafting and zip-lining.
Administration said the all-inclusive price per student is "just shy of $4,000," and that WorldStrides offers an Explorer Cup scholarship program that includes need-based awards and essay-based scholarships. Valerie said the district would consider fundraising and case-by-case support to help students for whom cost is a barrier.
Trustees asked whether scholarships are need-based and whether the district would provide additional assistance; Valerie confirmed both fundraising and individual support will be explored. The board did not take a vote on the proposal at the April meeting; administration said registration would be open to incoming ninth through 12th graders and that informational nights for families would be scheduled.
The district said it plans to finalize the itinerary and educational components and will return with details and registration steps.
