The Tri‑Valley Central School District board on April 22 approved an agreement with Land Associates (engineering, planning, architecture, surveying LLP) to serve as the district architect of record, following attorney review and a 7–2 vote.
Board members asked whether district counsel had reviewed the firm’s standard form agreement and how long the appointment would last; staff replied that the contract had been reviewed by the district attorney, that the firm accepted the redline changes the attorney requested and that the appointment is handled annually at the reorganizational meeting unless the board votes otherwise. "Our attorney went through this contract... when we sent it back to LAN Architects, they agreed with every change our attorney made," a district staff member said during the discussion.
Some board members said they wanted more direct board input into architect selection and cited concerns about earlier work performed under prior architects. Staff responded that the district must maintain an architect of record to satisfy State Education Department reporting and that it is typical to renew such appointments every few years, recommending a 3–5 year cycle for going back out for proposals.
The motion to approve the AIA‑based agreement passed 7–2. Staff said the superintendent is authorized to execute the agreement in a form substantially similar to that presented, subject to the attorney’s review and filing as required.
What this means: The contract approval clears the way for Land Associates to act as architect of record for current and future capital projects, subject to routine contract execution and any required reporting. Dissenting board members asked for more involvement in future selections and expressed continued scrutiny of past project outcomes.
