Board approves opioid settlement resolution and confirms township appointment; several routine motions pass

The Carroll County Board of Supervisors took several action items including passing an opioid settlement resolution and confirming a township appointment.

County attorney Kirk briefed the board on a new settlement involving smaller remaining defendants in ongoing opioid litigation, describing a total settlement amount described in the meeting as "a little north $97 million." He said attorney fees and expenses will be deducted and that the remainder is distributed through the state’s allocation process; under the county’s agreement with the attorney general’s office, portions will reach counties. Following the briefing, the board adopted Resolution 2026‑6 by roll call (Anderson, Houseman, Miners, Johnson, McCrae — all yes).

In other business the board rescinded a prior motion to appoint Tom Wangle to a township trusteeship and subsequently approved Jeff Sanders as the Maple River Township trustee. Board members discussed an apparent gap in notifying applicants and township clerks when appointments are made and said they would improve follow‑up communication.

The board also approved a motion requiring contractors who work at the courthouse to sign in and out with start and stop times, citing payroll verification and safety counts; and approved repairs in Drainage District 66 (Richland Township). These routine motions carried by voice votes.

The board concluded by taking a short break and voting to enter closed session to discuss litigation strategy under Iowa Code section 21.5(1)(c).
