Emerald Elementary students honored as Broomfield proclaims April 28 No Place for Hate Day

Sam Williams, principal at Emerald Elementary, told the council his school has been designated a No Place for Hate school for 13 consecutive years and introduced 45 student coalition members who meet every other week to plan antibullying activities. "We meet every other Monday to ask one simple question: How can we make our school a better place for everyone?" Williams said.

Students described activities including a community food drive that collected over 2,600 items, a "wear pink" anti-bullying day, a chalk-the-walk campaign and a student-written "resolution of respect" signed by the school. Volunteer Jerry, who identified himself as affiliated with the Anti-Defamation League, thanked the council for adopting the proclamation and said he hopes the program spreads beyond Broomfield.

The mayor proclaimed April 28, 2026 as No Place for Hate Day in the City and County of Broomfield to recognize antibias education and the coalition's work. Council members praised the students' public-speaking skills and encouraged them to continue their outreach to other schools.

The declaration accompanies continuing local efforts to reduce bullying in schools and to engage families and volunteers in supporting student-led prevention activities. The council and coalition planned a photo and public recognition following the meeting.

The presentation came during petitions and communications and was followed by additional proclamations and business on the agenda.
