Walton County staff asked to cost out possible civic buildings using $4–5M building‑department reserve

Commissioners discussed whether planning staff could be colocated in a satellite office and whether planning costs could be apportioned. Chair Commissioner Johns said the board could provide direction without a motion and asked staff to return in about four weeks with cost estimates and concept plans. The board gave that direction.
Why it matters: If the board decides to use the reserve for civic construction, the county may advance projects that reduce travel burdens for residents seeking planning and building services, but staff said legal review is needed to confirm permissible uses of the reserve funds.
What’s next: Staff will prepare a property assessment, rough cost estimates and a recommended scope of work for a development order and return to the board at the next South Walton meeting.
