New Prairie HOSA students celebrated as district names new elementary administrator and girls coach

Superintendent Dr. White opened by highlighting the HOSA delegation and invited Mrs. Smith, the HOSA sponsor, to introduce students. Mrs. Smith said the middle-school chapter was recognized as the largest in Indiana and that the whole chapter earned Gold status for alumni registrations. Several students said they advanced to state competitions and some may move on to the international leadership competition in June depending on May 1 confirmations.
Student Maddie Long described participation in an interviewing-skills event, saying the contest involves a resume and scheduled interview with a judge and helps build life skills. Lorelei Oak explained the 'Life‑Threatening Situations' event, which practices emergency-response tasks such as tourniquet application and calling 911. Lydia Humes described a health‑education presentation that taught peers CPR, AED placement and emergency-response steps; Gabby Smith described a presentation on depression and anxiety taught to seventh‑grade mentor students.
During consent-item announcements, the board congratulated Ryan Curlis as the district’s new girls varsity basketball coach and Shawna Tool as top assistant. Coach Curlis, who the board said has coached within the district for several years, told the room he plans to grow girls’ participation in basketball and build youth programs: "We're going to work to try to change that and do what we can and build it from there." The board and audience applauded.
The board also appointed Timothy Pedley as Prairie View Elementary administrator on a two‑year contract starting July 1, 2026. Pedley said he had been principal at Bristol Elementary in Elkhart Community Schools and described his focus on professional learning communities and staff support: "I'm thrilled to be joining New Prairie," he said.
The board’s remarks closed by welcoming the new appointees and noting the district’s final stretch of the school year and a rescheduled May meeting at the high school’s Think Big space.
