Avon trustees commend students, athlete Caleb Rashid and state-champion dance team in unanimous votes

The Avon Community School Corporation Board of School Trustees spent the opening portion of its working session recognizing student achievement and approved two formal commendations by unanimous vote.

Principal Mike McKinney introduced several students from Avon Middle School North. Sixth grader Raphael was singled out as Oriole of the quarter and noted as a member of the sixth-grade math bowl and the academic super bowl. Sixth-grade teacher Miss Bischoff said Raphael "really embodies academic success at Avon Middle School North," citing all-A grades and extracurricular involvement. Raphael told the board he hopes to "try and get into one of your classes this year." Eighth-graders Camden and Samantha Grammer were also recognized for perfect checkpoint scores and broad extracurricular participation.

The board read a resolution commending Caleb Rashid for athletic and academic achievements including a 2026 indoor state title in shot put at the Hoosier State Relays, a 2025 IHSAA discus state championship, a reported 4.718 GPA and acceptance of a full athletic scholarship to DePaul University. After Mrs. Parent read the commendation, a motion to approve it was made (Motion by Kim, seconded by Josh) and the board voted 5-0 to adopt the resolution.

The board likewise read and approved a resolution honoring the Avon Varsity Dance Team Large Ensemble for winning its sixth consecutive state championship in 2026. The motion to approve the dance-team commendation (Motion by Jennifer, seconded by Mike) also carried 5-0. Board members used the recognition period to praise students, coaches and families for their dedication and for representing the district.

Both commendations were approved as resolutions and no further policy decisions related to the recognitions were taken during the working session.
