Advisory panel approves several storefront signs, rejects vinyl letters in favor of durable treatments

During its April 28 session, the HDC Sign Advisory Council reviewed a series of individual storefront applications and issued recommendations to the full Historic District Commission.
The board recommended approval of a projecting sign for 23 Center Street (Tucker / Sailor’s Valentine concept), accepting the applicant’s plan to reuse an existing bracket and a 22x14‑inch wood blade. The committee also approved a previously reviewed hanging sign at 28B Easy Street but refused to accept vinyl letter applications submitted for the same property; the applicant withdrew the vinyl filings after staff and commissioners said vinyl was inconsistent with the sign book.
For 10 Main Street the advisory committee issued a favorable recommendation for a 24‑inch projecting sign that reuses a previously approved bracket; one commissioner preferred a face sign over a projecting disc, but the committee nonetheless forwarded a positive recommendation to the HDC. At 118 Orange Street the committee recommended approval of a carved wall sign for the new Dirty Dog Salon.
Commissioners repeatedly encouraged applicants to follow the published sign book and, where applicable, to participate in landlord‑led master sign plans so future tenants understand permitted placements and materials. The advisory recommendations will be forwarded to the full HDC; applicants may appear at that meeting if desired.
