Spencer–Owen board approves curriculum notice under SEA 442, grants and routine contracts

At its regular meeting the Spencer–Owen Community Schools board approved several routine but substantive items: public notice and parental-review procedures for human-sexuality curricular materials required under Senate Enrolled Act 442; acceptance of multiple grants; contract renewals for school-related services; and grouped personnel actions.

Mr. Taylor described the SEA 442 materials: classroom lessons at grades 4–5 (friendships and age-appropriate topics), grade 7 and grade 10 lessons. He said parents may review the materials on the district website, give consent through registration documents, and that alternate activities will be provided for students whose parents opt out. "For each grade level, parents have the opportunity to review those materials already in final forms and then provide their consent," Mr. Taylor said. The board confirmed the district will continue to use Health Ed Pros to deliver the elementary program in coordination with the counselor at McCormick Creek.

The board accepted multiple grants: an Indiana Digital Intervention Training and Implementation Grant for $16,400 to support reading instruction at Spencer Elementary (credit given to Mrs. Breedlove and Mrs. White); Title I funding for the 2025–26 year (amount transcribed as "56,7142" in the record — number appears malformed in the transcript and is noted as such below); and Title IV funding (amount transcribed as "38,7263" — also appears malformed). Administration thanked staff members for preparing grant applications and noted that Title IV funds will support STEM stipends and supplies.

The board also approved routine contracts to continue occupational therapy services and school psychologist services for the coming year (no changes in provider or cost were reported), accepted a food donation that the district valued at over $1,000 for Valley Backpack Buddies, and approved the start of a middle-school esports club (no district cost).
